About Brand

Bates started because decent work boots shouldn’t cost you a week’s pay, and dress shoes shouldn’t fall apart after six months of Sunday services. We’re a family operation out of central Ohio—third generation now—and we still think the best way to test a boot is to actually wear it. To job sites. Through winters. Until something breaks or nothing does.

We sit in that sweet spot between the cheap stuff that’ll have you limping by lunch and the fancy brands charging extra for a name stitched inside. Our customers are people who need their footwear to work as hard as they do, whether that’s twelve hours on concrete or chasing kids through a grocery store. We don’t do fashion-forward. We do forward-moving, all-day-wearing, forgot-I-even-had-them-on comfortable.

Every pair gets the same question before it ships: would we put our own feet in these? If the answer’s no, neither should you. That’s been the rule since my grandfather opened the first shop in 1961, and we haven’t found a good reason to change it.

Worn In, Walked Far

“Three years of daily wear on my Bates work boots and they’re just now getting that perfect broken-in feel. The leather actually gets better with age.”

Marcus T.

“I’m on my feet 10 hours a day in a hospital, and these are the only shoes that don’t leave me limping by shift’s end. Worth every penny.”

Jennifer K.

“Bought a pair for a hiking trip through Scotland — mud, rain, cobblestones, the works. They handled it all and still cleaned up nice for dinner.”

David R.

FAQs

What shipping options are available?

Standard shipping typically takes 5–7 business days, while expedited options are available for faster delivery. Free shipping is offered on orders over a certain threshold. Tracking information is sent via email once the order has been dispatched.

What is the return policy?

Items in original, unworn condition with tags attached can be returned within 30 days of delivery. Refunds are processed to the original payment method within 7–10 business days after the return is received. Items marked as final sale are not eligible for return.

How should products be cleaned and maintained?

Leather styles benefit from regular conditioning with a quality leather balm to prevent cracking. Rubber soles can be wiped clean with a damp cloth. Storing items away from direct heat and sunlight helps preserve materials over time.

How does sizing run?

Sizing generally follows standard measurements, though fit can vary slightly between styles. A size guide with specific measurements is available on each product page. Customer service can assist with recommendations for those between sizes.

How can customer support be reached?

Customer service is available by phone, email, and live chat during business hours. Most inquiries receive a response within 24 hours. Contact information and hours of operation are listed on the website’s contact page.

Are products safe for certain work environments?

Many styles meet industry safety standards, with features such as slip-resistant soles, electrical hazard protection, and steel or composite toe options. Specific certifications are listed in the product details. Checking workplace requirements before purchasing ensures the right match.
